Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +40 points this morning at 8,571. The UK 100 looks set to open higher this morning, having dropped yesterday following the Bank of England cutting interest rates by a quarter of a percent.

Stocks rose Thursday Stateside after President Donald Trump announced a trade deal framework between the U.S. and United Kingdom, the first major agreement hatched since the U.S. launched pre-emptive tariffs on most of the globe earlier this year.  The Dow Jones gained 254.48 points, or 0.62%, to settle at 41,368.45. The S&P rose 0.58% and closed at 5,663.94. The Nasdaq advanced 1.07% to end at 17,928.14.

Trump announced the deal outline from the Oval Office with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer on speakerphone. A 10% baseline tariff will remain on the U.K., according to a graphic posted on Truth Social post by Trump. However, the president noted that the 10% U.K. tariff could be on the low end of deals with future countries and said that “some will be much higher because they have massive trade surpluses.”

Shares were mixed in Asia on Friday as investors pinned their hopes on weekend trade talks between China and the US.  US futures and oil prices logged modest gains.  China reported that its exports rose at a faster-than-expected 8.1 per cent annual pace in April, down from 12.4 per cent the month before. Exports to the United States dropped more than 20 per cent, however, as President Donald Trump’s steep tariff increases took effect.  Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 0.1 per cent to 22,777.82, while the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.3 per cent to 3,343.38.  Top US and Chinese trade officials are due to meet Saturday in Geneva, Switzerland.

Company News:

British Airways owner IAG on Friday said it had placed an order for 53 new Airbus and Boeing long-haul aircraft.  The order consists of 32 Boeing 787-10 aircraft for British Airways and 21 Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, which may be assigned to Aer Lingus, Iberia, or LEVEL, IAG said.  Separately, the British Airways owner told markets this morning that revenue grew 9.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, to €7bn (£5.94bn) from €6.4bn last year.  Operating profit more than doubled, from €68m to €198m, while the firm’s profit after tax swung from a €4m loss last year to a €176m profit in 2025.  IAG attributed the boost in operating profit to strong revenue growth and a lower fuel price, which offset expected cost increases. Its operating margin also increased to 2.8 per cent.

Rightmove this morning reported that it has kicked off 2025 in strong fashion and is sticking to its 8–10% revenue growth target.  The property portal says Average Revenue per Advertiser (ARPA) is climbing, membership is up, and new AI-driven tools are live.  Strategic areas like Mortgages and Rentals are also on track, and Rightmove still commands over 80% of UK portal traffic.
