Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -67 at 10,406.
UK markets are set to open higher, with UK100 futures up ~0.4%, building on Friday’s close.

Wall Street finished Friday with a strong rebound as investors stepped back into risk after a bruising tech-led selloff earlier in the week.  The Dow Jones surged 2.47%, closing above 50,000 for the first time. The S&P 500 rose 1.97% and the Nasdaq gained 2.18%, marking its biggest one-day rise since November. Despite the bounce, the Nasdaq and S&P still ended the week slightly lower, while the Dow posted solid weekly gains.  Amazon remained a central focus. Shares ended the session down ~5.6% following its announcement of $200bn in 2026 capex, lifting combined AI spending plans across Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta toward $600bn. The scale of spending continues to fuel investor unease around returns, even as Friday’s rally suggested some recalibration of near-term AI disruption fears.  Semiconductors led the rebound, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index jumping 5.7%, while software stocks also stabilized after heavy losses earlier in the week.

Asian markets surged, extending Friday’s US rebound. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index rose to a fresh all-time high, with gains broad-based across the region.  Japan led the move after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s landslide election victory, which delivered political clarity and expectations of fiscal support. The Nikkei 225 jumped over 5% to record highs, with TOPIX also hitting a peak.  South Korea’s KOSPI rallied around 4–5%, rebounding sharply after last week’s tech-driven rout. Hong Kong, China and Australia also posted strong gains, while US equity futures edged higher during Asian hours.
