The UK 100 is called to open -3 points at 9,642. The UK 100 is predicted to make another hesitant start on Tuesday, as fresh data shows UK households cut back pre-Christmas spending at the fastest pace in four and a half years. Card spending last month was down 1.1% compared to November last year, according to Barclays, the largest fall since February 2021.
The S&P pulled back on Monday as investors awaited the Federal Reserve’s last meeting of the year later this week. The broad market index fell 0.35% to close at 6,846.51, while the Nasdaq slid 0.14% to settle at 23,545.90. The Dow Jones shed 215.67 points, or 0.45%, to finish at 47,739.32. Weighing on stock sentiment was the 10-year Treasury yield continuing its recent run higher. The benchmark has moved up this month despite the likelihood that the Fed is going to cut this week as investors worried about the state of inflation in the new year and whether the central bank will be able to continue easing.
Asian markets are mixed this morning, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng retreating 1.1% and mainland Chinese and Indian benchmarks down 0.3-0.4%, while Japan’s Nikkei inches up 0.1%.
Ashtead Group reported its unaudited results for the half year and second quarter ending 31 October 2025, showing a modest increase in revenue and rental revenue by 1% and 2% respectively. Despite a decrease in operating profit due to non-recurring costs related to US relisting and UK restructuring, the company maintained strong free cash flow, enabling significant shareholder returns through dividends and share buybacks. Ashtead reaffirmed its full-year guidance and announced a new $1.5 billion share buyback program, aligning with its strategic move to list on the NYSE.
Frasers Group today stepped up the expansion of its property portfolio by announcing the acquisition of Swindon Designer Outlet. The move, which follows last month’s deal for Braehead Shopping Centre in Renfrew, comes as Frasers looks to support the outlet strategies of brand partners including Nike, Adidas and Boss. Swindon Designer Outlet, which opened in 1997, totals 250,000 sq. ft and attracts over three million visitors annually. It is one of the UK’s top five outlets by footfall.
