Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +30 points this morning at 8,589. The UK 100 looks set to open higher on this morning, recouping Wednesday’s loss, ahead of a Bank of England decision and as eyes remain fixed on tariff headlines.

The S&P rose in choppy trading after the Federal Reserve signalled that the risks for an economic slowdown and higher prices are increasing.  The broad market index added 0.43% to close at 5,631.28, while the Nasdaq gained 0.27% to end at 17,738.16. The Dow Jones climbed 284.97 points, or 0.70%, and settled at 41,113.97. The 30-stock index was aided by a nearly 11% pop in Disney shares after the company reported a fiscal second-quarter earnings beat and a surprise jump in streaming subscribers.

As expected, the Federal Open Market Committee held its benchmark overnight borrowing rate in a range between 4.25% to 4.5%, where it has been since December.

Asian stock markets experienced a notable uptick on Wednesday, buoyed by the announcement of upcoming trade talks between China and the United States.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 edged up 0.2 per cent in morning trading to 36,863.15. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 0.2 per cent to 8,190.40. South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.3 per cent to 2,581.62. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng surged 0.8 per cent to 22,864.74, while the Shanghai Composite gained 0.8 per cent to 3,342.66.

Company News:

InterContinental Hotels Group reported a 3.3% increase in global revenue per available room (RevPAR) for the first quarter on Thursday, driven by robust business, leisure and group travel

Next has beaten expectations for sales in its first quarter and, while it has not changed its full-year sales guidance, has nudged up its profit outlook.   Full-price clothing sales in the 13 weeks to 26 April rose 11.4% compared to a year ago, versus the previous target of 6.5% growth, which the clothing chain says was mostly due to warmer weather increasing demand for summer clothing.  The full-year outlook for group pre-tax profits has been lifted £14 million to £1.08 billion.
