Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -20 points at at 10,645.
Stocks in London are set to open slightly lower on Wednesday as investors digest an escalation in the Middle East, with oil prices climbing after fresh US strikes on Iran.

In the UK, the decline in permanent job postings eased markedly in June, while demand for temporary workers strengthened to its fastest pace in more than three years, according to the latest KPMG and Recruitment & Employment Confederation report compiled by S&P Global.

The permanent placements index rose to 49.1 points in June from 44.1 in May. The permanent salaries index increased to 53.1 from 52.2, marking the fastest pace of pay growth since January, while the temporary wages index climbed to 52.9 from 51.4.

The Dow Jones pulled back from record levels on Tuesday as investors once again appeared to rotate out of names tied to artificial intelligence and as oil prices advanced.

The 30-stock index lost 130.76 points, or 0.25%, after earlier hitting a new all-time intraday high. Ultimately, the Dow closed at 52,925.15. The Nasdaq fell 1.16% to 25,818.69. The S&P slid 0.45% to end at 7,503.85.  Shares of Micron closed down 4.7%, with KLA, Marvell Technology, Broadcom and AMD also posting declines. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) fell more than 3%.

In Asia on Wednesday, the Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo was down 0.8%, despite data showing Japan’s current account surplus widened in May.

Company News:

Jet2 collected £400m from the rising jet fuel prices which caused widespread fear that summer holidays could be cancelled and airlines could go bust.  The package holiday provider revealed that it defied the travel chaos caused by the Middle East conflict to instead take a £388m balance sheet boost from rising jet fuel prices.  Because the company had already locked in low fuel prices with its suppliers, the rising market cost of fuel meant that the value of its fuel contracts soared during the conflict.  The AIM-listed firm said an extra £388m in income was “primarily due to favourable fair value movements in jet fuel derivatives at the balance sheet date as market pricing increased following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East”.
