Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -12 points this morning at 8,585.  The UK 100 looks set to open marginally lower this morning after the UK’s bluechip index extended its longest winning streak in history yesterday by the skin of its teeth, adding a solitary point during yesterday session.

Markets are also focused on upcoming trade talks between the US and China, set to take place in Switzerland.  Optimism had risen that these discussions could lead to tariff reductions, though the current levels, 145% on Chinese goods into the US and 125% on US goods into China, remain extraordinarily high – as are the political stakes.  The People’s Bank of China has responded to tariffs by cutting the reserve requirement ratio and reducing its short-term policy rate to 1.4%, as Beijing sought to support Chinese lending and economic activity.

The Dow Jones lost 389.83 points, or 0.95%, to close at 40,829.00. The S&P shed 0.77% and settled at 5,606.91, and the Nasdaq dipped 0.87% to end at 17,689.66. All three of the major averages posted back-to-back declines.  Shares of Tesla shed 1.8% after the company’s new car sales in Britain and Germany fell to their lowest in more than two years in April, even though demand for electric vehicles grew. Goldman Sachs shares dipped 1.8%, pulling the Dow lower. Tech giants Nvidia and Meta Platforms also declined.

Asian equities and the U.S. dollar rose following news of an upcoming meeting between senior U.S. and Chinese trade officials.  In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 inched up 0.1% to 36,870.46, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumped 0.5% to 22,767.94 as investors remained cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve’s rate decision later today.  Mainland China’s blue-chip CSI 300 index gained 0.2%, closing at 3,816.80. Earlier strength in regional currencies faded, with South Korea’s won falling sharply and China’s recent rate cut putting pressure on the yuan.

Company News:

JD Wetherspoon said this morning that sales had jumped five per cent over the last quarter as the pub giant continued to sell more locations.  The pub giant has sold off seven of its pubs since the start of the year, despite opening only two new ones, it said in a trading update today.  It said it expected to open four or five more pubs in the rest of this financial year, followed by around ten next year.  In its full-year results in October, Wetherspoons revealed that the number of pubs had fallen from 879 in 2019 to just 800. This number has now dropped to 795.

Rentokil Initial said on Wednesday that CEO Andy Ransom will retire by its 2026 annual general meeting, with a successor search already underway, led by Chair Richard Solomons.  Ransom took over as CEO from Alan Brown in 2013, after the latter stepped down following the failed turnaround of a loss-making acquisition, City Link.  Since then, Ransom has guided the British pest control firm through a rough couple of years marred by weak demand at its largest market, North America.
