The UK 100 called to open -18 points this morning at 9,146. The UK 100 looks set to open marginally lower this morning, in focus today will be the Bank of England’s interest rate decision, The monetary policy committee (MPC) is widely expected to cut interest rates by 0.25% to 4% at midday today. The move would mark the fifth reduction since August last year, when rates started steadily coming down from a peak of 5.25%. The anticipated cut comes against a backdrop of weak economic growth and a deteriorating labour market. Earnings growth has also cooled, although the MPC remains wary given that inflation is seen heading towards 4% later this year.
Global markets have held firm in the face of today’s higher US tariffs, In Asia the Nikkei 225 and Hang Seng index both in positive territory this morning.
Stateside saw stocks rise Wednesday, thanks to a jump in Apple, as investors analysed the latest batch of corporate earnings. The S&P gained 0.73% to close at 6,345.06, while the Nasdaq advanced 1.21% and settled at 21,169.42. The Dow Jones rose 81.38 points, or 0.18%, ending at 44,193.12.
Apple climbed 5% after a White House official confirmed to CNBC that the iPhone maker is going to boost its investment in domestic manufacturing by $100 billion. That brings its total U.S. investment to $600 billion over the next four years.
Hikma Pharmaceuticals reported solid performance in the first half of 2025, with a 6% increase in revenue driven by strong demand across its portfolio and successful product launches. Despite a decrease in core operating profit due to a strong comparator in 2024 and a change in product mix, the company anticipates a return to growth in the second half. Hikma is strengthening its manufacturing capabilities, advancing its pipeline, and expanding its portfolio through strategic partnerships and acquisitions. The company is also investing significantly in R&D and US manufacturing.
InterContinental Hotels Group reported a fall in U.S. revenue per available room (RevPAR) in the second quarter on Thursday, as economic uncertainties dent consumer spending in its largest market. The hotel operator said U.S. RevPAR fell 0.9% for the three months ended June 30, compared to 3.5% growth in the first quarter.
WPP said on Thursday it was on track to meet annual forecasts which it downgraded last month, when it warned of lower client spend and named senior Microsoft executive Cindy Rose as its new CEO to lead a recovery. For the three months to the end of June, WPP reported net sales, which it calls revenue less pass-through costs, of 2.54 billion pounds ($3.40 billion), down 5.8% on an underlying basis.
