Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +16 points at at 10,904.
Stocks in London are set to open marginally higher on Thursday as investors monitored developments around the Strait of Hormuz while assessing another busy slate of corporate earnings.

Iran and Oman have agreed a route for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz and are putting the final touches on arrangements for jointly managing the strategic waterway, Tehran’s foreign ministry said.

However, officials briefing Iranian media stressed that any reopening of the strait would depend on the US fulfilling what Tehran sees as its commitment to end its naval blockade of Iranian ports.

In the US on Wednesday, Wall Street ended mixed, with the Dow Jones up 0.5%, while the S&P and the Nasdaq fell 0.2% and 0.8%, respectively.

In Asia on Thursday, the Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo was down 0.8%. In China, the Shanghai Composite slipped 0.1%, while the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong fell 1.8%.

Company News:

Persimmon said on Thursday it expects its annual ‌home deliveries to be at the top of its prior forecast range, supported by robust first-half volume growth, but warned that rising costs might not be fully offset in 2027.  The UK housing market, already grappling with easing demand amid elevated mortgage rates and high inflation, is now tackling rising material costs in the fallout of the Iran conflict, although Persimmon’s in-house production model had so far left it more resilient than ‌its peers.  Persimmon said actions to mitigate costs, including procurement and overhead savings, are underway, but estimated the impact of increased inflation could be around £40 million ($53.83 million) to £50 million over the next 18 months before mitigation.  For 2026, it now expects to deliver around 12,500 home completions, at the upper end of the previous forecast, with underlying pre-tax profit in line with market expectations of £454 million.

WPP reported a 4.7% ‌drop in first-half adjusted revenue on Thursday as account losses continued to weigh, but the British ad group said the trajectory had improved in recent months, particularly in its WPP Media planning and buying unit.  The company reported revenue less pass-through costs of £4.75 billion ($6.39 billion) for the half, down 4.7% on a like-for-like basis, but ahead of analysts’ expectations. Headline operating profit fell 2.7% on the same basis to £398 million.  It said it continued to expect an improving ‌like-for-like growth trajectory for the rest of the year, with adjusted revenue falling by low to mid-single digits in the second half.  Chief Executive Cindy Rose, who was tasked with turning around WPP when she took over in September, said she was encouraged by the group’s performance.
