Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +18 points this morning at 9,234.  The UK 100 index looks set to hold on to its recent gains after Wall Street markets finished in positive territory last night.

London’s top flight forged ahead on Thursday as the bond market calmed further and investors bet on a Federal Reserve interest rate cut.

Retail sales figures for July today came in ahead of expectations after the Office for National Statistics reported volume growth of 0.6%.  The reading followed the previous month’s downwardly revised 0.3% rise and was better than City forecasts for growth of 0.2%.

Stateside yesterday saw the S&P closed at a fresh record high after an afternoon boost pushed stocks solidly into the green as traders shook off weak private employment data earlier in the day. A big jobs report now looms over the market, with traders wanting a figure Friday that bolsters rate cut chances without causing a scare about a recession.  The broad market S&P 500 finished up 0.83% at 6,502.08, while the Nasdaq settled up 0.98% at 21,707.69. The Dow Jones finished up 350.06 points, or 0.77%, at 45,621.29. It was S&P 500’s 21st record close so far this year.   The ADP private payrolls report showed an increase of 54,000 in August. Economists polled by Dow Jones had expected private employers to add 75,000 jobs. The figure is also less than the revised 106,000 in July.

In Asia, Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 lifted 0.9% after President Trump reduced tariffs on Japanese car imports to 15% from 27.5% previously.

Company News:

Berkeley today described trading as stable in the first four months of its financial year, following a similar pattern to the previous year.  The UK 100-listed regeneration specialist remains on track to achieve its pre-tax earnings guidance of £450 million for the full year ending 30 April.  About 85% of this has already been secured through exchanged sales contracts.  It expects a similar level of profit in 2027, in line with guidance given at full-year results.
