Asian markets closed mostly down overnight, with major technology and AI-related stocks leading a widespread sell-off, echoing declines seen on Wall Street. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index had the most significant drop, closing down nearly 3%. South Korea’s KOSPI index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index also saw losses. In contrast, China’s Shanghai Composite Index managed a slight gain.
Barratt Redrow reports a resilient performance amid challenging market conditions, with a focus on sustainable growth and operational excellence. The company aims to complete 22,000 homes annually and is on track to achieve £100 million in cost synergies, with significant progress in integrating Redrow’s operations. The forward order book remains strong, and the company is optimistic about its FY26 guidance, despite uncertainties related to government policy and market demand.
Marks & Spencer today reported a 55% slide in half-year profits to £184.1 million, driven lower by the impact of the cyber attack earlier this year. Chief executive Stuart Machin said: “The first half of this year was an extraordinary moment in time for M&S. “However, the underlying strength of our business and robust financial foundations gave us the resilience to face into the challenge and deal with it. We are now getting back on track.” Machin said profit in the second half of the year is expected to be at least in line with last year. He added: “This should give us a springboard into the new financial year and set M&S up for further growth.”
