The UK 100 is called to open +66 points at 10,015. Global markets are set for a strong start to the week, with the UK 100 index seen opening back above the 10,000 threshold. London’s top flight closed up 0.2% or 19.76 points at 9951.14 on Friday but had been as high as a record 10,046.25. In 2025, the UK 100 rose by 21.4%.
The S&P closed slightly higher on Friday, the first trading day of 2026, as gains in semiconductor names kept the index afloat. The benchmark closed up 0.19% at 6,858.47, while the Nasdaq fell 0.03% to finish at 23,235.63. The two had been solidly positive earlier in the day, with the S&P and the tech-heavy Nasdaq trading higher by 0.7% and 1.5% at their peaks, respectively. The Dow Jones moved up 319.10 points, or 0.66%, to settle at 48,382.39. Friday’s gain marks a reversal from the first-day trading trend of the last few years. The S&P finished lower on the first day of trading for each of the last three years.
The improvement follows a strong session for Asia markets, led by Japanese stocks after the Nikkei 225 surged by 3%. US futures are in positive territory after the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7% and the S&P 500 index lifted 0.2% by the end of Friday’s session.
Oil traders in Asia gave a calm response to Venezuela developments as the price of Brent Crude settled 0.7% lower at $60.30 a barrel. Gold is up 2% at $4419 an ounce.
Auction Technology Group today disclosed it had received a series of 11 “unsolicited, highly conditional” proposals from its largest shareholder. The most recent approach by FitzWalter was pitched at 360p a share, which values the former FTSE 250-listed company at about £430 million. The price compares with today’s opening price of 270p. Auction Technology, whose brands include The Saleroom and BidSpotter, said the proposals were an opportunistic attempt to acquire the company at a time when its market valuation is disconnected from fair value.
