On Friday both the Nasdaq and the S&P rose, boosted by shares of tech giant Amazon on the heels of its strong quarterly results. The tech-heavy Nasdaq advanced 0.61% to finish the session at 23,724.96, while the broad market index gained 0.26% to reach 6,840.20. The Dow Jones closed 40.75 points higher, or 0.09%, to 47,562.87. Amazon shares rallied 9.6% after the e-commerce giant said its cloud computing unit’s revenue increased 20% in the third quarter, exceeding Wall Street’s estimates. The company’s CEO, Andy Jassy, said that AWS is “growing at a pace we haven’t seen since 2022” and that AI and core infrastructure are experiencing “strong” demand.
Associated British Foods has reported a 13% fall in full-year profit, hurt by a weak performance in its sugar business that reflected low European prices. But the company has forecast an improved outcome in its new financial year.
BP on Tuesday posted a third-quarter underlying replacement cost profit, or adjusted net income, of $2.21 billion, compared with the average $2.02 billion in a company-provided poll of analysts and $2.27 billion a year ago. BP kept the pace of its quarterly share buyback programme at $750 million through the third quarter. Chief Executive Murray Auchincloss said he expected completed or announced disposal agreements to reach around $5 billion for this year.
