Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +27 points this morning at 8,801. The UK 100 looks set to bounce back from yesterdays drop after the pound has steadied at near to $1.364 after the Prime Minister said Rachel Reeves will be Chancellor for a “very long time to come”.  Keir Starmer said it was “absolutely wrong” to suggest the Chancellor’s visibly tearful appearance in the Commons related to the welfare U-turn, which put an almost £5 billion black hole in her plans.  Companies exposed to rising borrowing costs came under significant pressure yesterday, with housebuilder Berkeley down by 8%, Land Securities 5% lower and NatWest off by 5.5%.  The selling came as the yield on Government bonds, called gilts, jumped in the face of speculation over the future of the chancellor.

The S&P rose on Wednesday after President Donald Trump announced a U.S.-Vietnam trade deal. However, a new report showing private payrolls surprisingly decreased in June, which raised concerns over the state of the U.S. economy.  The broad market index gained 0.47% and closed at 6,227.42. The S&P scored a fresh all-time intraday high and closed at a record. The Nasdaq advanced 0.94% and posted a record close of 20,393.13. The Dow Jones slipped 10.52 points, or 0.02%, and ended at 44,484.42.

Asian shares were subdued on Thursday as investors braced for a key U.S. jobs report that may justify imminent rate cuts by the Federal Reserve and waited on the passage of a massive U.S. tax and spending bill in Congress.

Company News:

Currys reported an annual adjusted pre-tax profit above market expectations on Thursday, as rising sales and tight cost control helped offset pressures from inflation and increased wages.  It posted an adjusted pre-tax profit of 162 million pounds ($220.95 million) for the year ended May 3, above analysts estimate of 159 million pounds, according to a company poll.

Watches of Switzerland, has posted record revenues for the year ending April 27 – but seen profit before tax fall.  Group revenue came in at £1.65bn – up 7% on last year, however profit before tax fell by 18% to £76m.  The US was the main driver of growth for Watches of Switzerland, with revenues up 16% Stateside, versus just 2% in the UK. However, this was a return to growth for the domestic market, which shrank in the previous year.
