The UK 100 is called to open +7 at 10,348. The UK 100 looks set to open modestly higher this morning. UK equities closed at fresh record highs on Monday, with the UK 100 rising 1.1% as investors rotated into banks and defensive healthcare stocks, offsetting heavy losses in energy and mining. Financials reached their highest level since 2008, supported by relative earnings resilience and a weaker pound.
Wall Street closed higher, snapping a short losing streak as investors refocused on growth and earnings momentum. The S&P 500 rose 0.54%, finishing just shy of a record close, while the Nasdaq gained 0.56% and the Dow advanced 1.05%. Chipmakers led the rebound as confidence in long-term AI demand resurfaced, with strong gains across semiconductors and AI infrastructure names. Economic data supported sentiment, with U.S. manufacturing activity expanding for the first time in a year. Energy stocks lagged as crude prices slid sharply, while defensive sectors such as staples outperformed. Treasury yields pushed higher, reflecting reduced expectations for aggressive rate cuts and continued reassessment of the Fed’s future policy stance.
Asian markets rebounded sharply after Monday’s selloff, led by a powerful rally in technology shares. Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged nearly 4%, while South Korea’s KOSPI jumped around 6% as investors rotated back into AI-exposed names, including major chipmakers. The rebound followed a firm U.S. close and improving sentiment around AI investment durability. Australia outperformed after the RBA raised rates by 25bp to 3.85%, citing persistent inflation and a tight labour market. Indian equities surged after the U.S. announced a trade deal lowering tariffs on Indian goods, boosting risk sentiment across the region. China and Hong Kong posted more modest gains, with investors still weighing mixed signals from recent economic data.
AG Barr today announced the acquisitions of Fentimans and Frobishers in deals worth a total £51 million. Fentimans, the family-owned soft drinks and mixers brand known for its botanical brewing process, has been bought for £38 million and natural juices business Frobishers for £13 million. AG Barr said both businesses were in the attractive adult soft drinks market, which is benefitting from the consumer trend of reduced alcohol consumption. The deals have been announced alongside a full-year trading update, which showed revenues growth of 4% to £437 million and an improved margin of about 14.7%.
