Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -20 points at 9740.
The UK 100 looks set to open lower this morning, this follows a record close for the index on Thursday.

Data out this morning from lender Nationwide showed house prices unexpectedly rose 0.3% in October compared to no change expected by economists.  That compares to a rise of 0.5% in September, so does indicate slowing momentum, though the upside surprise today is notable.  On an annual basis prices rose 2.4%, ahead of an expected 2.3% rise.

U.S. stocks fell yesterday as investors digested a batch of Big Tech earnings, while a meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded.  The S&P dipped 0.99% to finish the day at 6,822.34, while the Nasdaq dropped 1.57% to close at 23,581.14. The Dow Jones traded down 109.88 points, or 0.23%, to 47,522.12.

However, futures tied to the Dow Jones added 17 points, or 0.05%. S&P futures gained 0.5%, while Nasdaq 100 futures added 1%.  Apple and Amazon posted quarterly results after market close Thursday, capping off a big week for tech results. Amazon shares rallied more than 13% after the e-commerce giant said its cloud computing unit’s revenue increased 20% in the third quarter, exceeding Wall Street’s estimates. Apple, meanwhile, rose about 3% on the back of its strong fiscal fourth-quarter earnings and forecast for the iPhone maker’s December quarter.  Streaming leader Netflix added more than 3% after the company announced a 10-for-1 stock split.

Asian markets were mixed overnight, with the Nikkei 225 seeing strong gains while the Hang Seng and Shanghai Composite indexes fell. The Nikkei 225 surged by over 2.1% to a record high of 52,411.34. In contrast, the Hang Seng Index was down 1.09% to 25,996.13, and the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.78% to 3,955.9939. The KOSPI index closed with a 0.68% gain, at 4,114.82.
