Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +50 points at at 10,688.
Stocks in London are set to open higher on Wednesday, supported by strong trade in Asia, before eyes turn to US data in the afternoon.

US stocks fell on Tuesday as Treasury yields surged to fresh multi-decade highs: the 10-year yield touched 5.234%, its highest since June 2007, while the 30-year hit 5.552%, a level last seen in 2004. The move followed CME FedWatch pricing showing markets assigning a roughly 70% probability to a further 25bp Fed rate increase at the 27–28 October FOMC meeting – an unusually hawkish repricing given still-elevated inflation. The S&P 500 fell 0.8% to 7,683.69, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.9% to 26,820.38 as ARM Holdings slid 8.7%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.7% to 51,481.10. Sentiment around AI-related names was also dented by a leaked Anthropic IPO prospectus reportedly referencing “existential risk” language around frontier AI, and reports that OpenAI had shelved a model after internal safety tests. Brent crude held near $96.5/bbl as an escalating US–Iran standoff over the Strait of Hormuz – with President Trump reported to have rejected a peace proposal – kept a geopolitical premium in the price, though crude eased back from intraday highs late in Tuesday’s London session, dragging energy majors lower into the UK’s close.

Asian markets were mostly firmer overnight: the Nikkei 225 rebounded 1.9% to around 66,732, snapping a two-session losing run on quarter-end rebalancing flows, and the ASX 200 added 0.9% to close at 8,790. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lagged, down 0.3% to 24,440, the Shanghai Composite edged up 0.3%, and South Korea’s Kospi was choppy – giving back an early 1%+ gain to trade back in the 6,800s as this report went to press. In the UK, today brings final Q2 GDP, current account and business investment data at 07:00 BST, followed by the BoE’s Financial Policy Committee record at 09:30 BST; the next full Bank Rate decision isn’t due until 5 November (Bank Rate currently 3.75%). Germany publishes retail sales, import prices and unemployment data through the morning, building to a preliminary September inflation reading at 12:00 BST that consensus puts at 3.1–3.2% y/y, up from 2.9% in August. Looking further out, the Fed’s FOMC next meets 27–28 October and the ECB’s Governing Council on 28–29 October.
