Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -5 at 10,166.
The UK 100 is forecast to open marginally lower this morning,

Stateside yesterday saw The S&P 500 fall on Thursday, bogged down by Microsoft, as traders reacted to the megacap technology company’s latest earnings results as well as the Federal Reserve interest rate decision.  The broad market index slipped 0.13% to close at 6,969.01, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.72% to end at 23,685.12. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.11%, or 55.96 points, and settled at 49,071.56. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin shed more than 5% and hit its lowest level in almost two months.

Asian markets declined broadly, tracking the weak US tech close and a renewed risk-off tone.  Hong Kong led regional losses, with tech stocks under pressure after recent outsized gains.  In China, equities slipped more than 1%, despite headlines around state support for insurers and efforts to stabilise markets.  Japan edged lower as Tokyo inflation cooled at the headline level but remained firm enough at the core to keep BOJ tightening expectations alive.  South Korea bucked the trend, supported by continued strength in chipmakers following strong earnings from Samsung and SK Hynix.

Gold, silver and copper prices have fallen sharply after they set record highs earlier this week.  Gold is down 5% at $5166 an ounce, which compares with near to $5600 in dealings early yesterday. It is still up by 20% this month, which would be the strongest performance in more than three decades.  Brent Crude has fallen 1.8% to $68.32 a barrel.

Company News:

AstraZeneca today said it had boosted its weight management portfolio through a strategic collaboration agreement with China’s CSPC Pharmaceuticals.  The companies plan to advance the development of multiple next-generation therapies for obesity and type 2 diabetes across eight programmes.  They will initially progress four programmes, which utilise CSPC’s AI-driven peptide drug discovery platform and LiquidGel once-monthly dosing platform technology.  AstraZeneca will receive exclusive global rights outside of China to CSPC’s once-monthly injectable weight management portfolio.  CSPC will receive an upfront payment of $1.2 billion from AstraZeneca and is also eligible to receive development and regulatory milestones of up to $3.5 billion across all programmes.
