Markets Overview:

UK 100 is called to open -10 points this morning at 6951.  Calls for a muted open today come as investor sentiment looks to have taken lead from overnight sessions in Asia, The Nikkei was down 220 points at 28,834 and the Hang Seng gave back 447 points to settle at 28,856. The pullback came as China Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing PMI for April came in at 51.1 and 54.9, respectively, well below expectations.  It was a different story stateside yesterday as earnings season continued in full swing, with a beat on expectations from amazon.  with the Dow Jones added 240 points to close at 34,060, while the the S&P 500 gained 28 points to trade at 4,211.

Company News:

 

AstraZeneca expects higher H2 sales as Q1 sales and earnings beat forecasts, including $275m in COVID-19 vaccine sales. Their pretax profit jumped 72% YoY to $1.61bn (2020: $935m).

 

Barclays Q1 profit more than doubles as bad loans shrink. They reported a profit before tax of £2.4bn (2020: £923m) above the £1.76bn average of analysts’ forecasts. They took an impairment charge of £55m for further bad loan charges, which was much less than analysts had forecast.

 

Card Factory says that their performance in England and Wales since reopening has topped expectations.

 

CVS Group expects FY revenue to be ahead of current forecasts.

 

Hikma announces the US FDA approval of KLOXXADO nasal spray for the emergency treatment of opioid overdose. They also see FY generics revenue towards the top end of outlook range of $770-810m as FY outlook for the group is unchanged.

 

Smurfit Kappa says their underlying revenue has increased 6% YoY in Q1 to 2.27bn euros.
