The UK 100 called to open +4 points at 8537. The UK 100 looks set to open slightly higher again this morning, adding to gains from yesterday.
Stateside yesterday saw stocks climb, recovering some ground from a sell-off sparked by the emergence of Chinese A.I startup DeepSeek that sent tech shares reeling. The S&P advanced 0.92% to 6,067.70, with technology shares seeing the biggest gains among sectors. The Nasdaq surged 2.03% to 19,733.59, following a 3.1% decline a day ago. The Dow Jones added 136.77 points, or 0.31%, to 44,850.35.
In Asia this morning, the Nikkei 225 index recovered from Tuesday’s losses, gaining 0.7% to 39,273.49. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.7% to 8,455.70 after data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the Consumer Price Index increased by 0.2% in the December 2024 quarter, marking the smallest rise since the June 2020 quarter, when inflation declined during the COVID-19 outbreak. India’s Sensex was up 0.5%, while the SET in Bangkok shed 0.2%. Most markets were closed for holidays. Investors were focusing on the Federal Reserve’s rate decision due later in the day. U.S. futures were flat and oil prices fell.
AJ Bell PLC reported a robust performance in its Q1 trading update, with the platform reaching a record 561,000 customers and £89.5 billion in assets under administration. The company experienced significant inflows, particularly in its D2C segment, driven by increased brand awareness and competitive pricing. The investments segment saw its assets under management surpass £7 billion.
WH Smith PLC has reported a promising start to its financial year, with strong growth across its travel divisions, particularly in North America where like-for-like revenue increased by 3%. The company has announced new store openings at major airports and continues to see revenue growth, despite some economic uncertainties, positioning it well for further expansion in 2025.
