Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +9 points at 9264.  The UK 100 is poised to open slightly higher, broadly inline with European peers as global equities brush off a disappointing sales outlook from US chip giant Nvidia.

The S&P ticked higher on Wednesday as investors awaited Nvidia earnings.  The broad market index ended the day up 0.24% at 6,481.40, setting a fresh all-time closing high. The Nasdaq closed up 0.21% at 21,590.14, and the Dow Jones gained 147.16 points, or 0.32%, to finish at 45,565.23.

Asian stocks wobbled on Thursday as blowout earnings from artificial intelligence bellwether Nvidia were offset by worries over the outlook for its China business, while the dollar remained shaky as investors bet on a near-term rate cut.

The Nikkei 225 was last up 0.4%. Korean stocks advanced 0.3% after the Bank of Korea kept rates on hold at 2.5%, as widely expected by economists. Stocks in Hong Kong stocks slumped, with the Hang Seng Index falling 1%, led by a 9.7% decline in Meituan shares, after the Chinese food delivery giant reported a drop in second-quarter profit on Wednesday.

Company News:

Antofagasta started construction of a new pit at its Centinela complex in Chile, which will cost over $1 billion, the company said in a statement. That’s in addition to the $5.4 billion growth project already under construction. The company is having a strong year, buoyed by higher cooper prices amid continuing demand for data centres and the energy transition, plus Trump’s proposed threatened on the metal.

Hunting reported revenue for the first half of the year which missed estimates, though profit beat and it gave a forecast range inline with expectations.

Hunting also announced a share buyback of up to $40 million, citing recent progress and raised its dividend. Hunting noted commodity prices and the geopolitical landscape have been “extremely volatile” though said oil and gas demand has remained steady and is likely to remain at a consistent level in the medium to long term.

Nvidia beat market expectations in keenly anticipated financial results.  The Microchip maker recorded revenues of $46.7bn (£34.6bn) in just three months up to July, latest financial data from the company showed, slightly better than Wall Street observers had expected.
