Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open +26 points at 7423; Focus shifts back on to Sino-American trade talks after another phone call between negotiators concluded with agreement that both parties would stay in contact, as the phase-one deal remains on the horizon. Shares in Asia showed modest gains. Oil was little changed overnight at $57.92 a barrel, as was gold which settled at $1456.74 an ounce.

 

In corporate news this morning:

Compass Group beats on underlying profit. Figures came in at £1.88bn v £1.8bn expected. The company whilst posting higher profit did warn on its European performance which hurt volumes and margins.. Full-year dividend up 6.1%.

Pets At Home saw underlying pre-tax profit at the top-end of market forecasts. Company says it is on track to deliver full year profit ahead of plan. Half -Year group revenue up 9.4% at £546.3m.

BT is looking for a new broadband equipment supplier as it plans to roll out full -fibre broadband to millions of home by mid-2020’s.

De La Rue has announced plans to suspend its dividend payment and review its business to cut costs. It’s bank notes printing unit continues to struggle with depressed margins and competition with digital payments.
