Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +2 at 10,687.
The UK 100 finished the prior session flat and is expected to open slightly lower, with futures pointing marginally higher.

U.S. equities tumbled on Monday as investors grappled with persistent fears around artificial intelligence disruptions to various industries and President Donald Trump’s decision to raise his global tariffs.  The Dow Jones dropped 821.91 points, or 1.66%, to close at 48,804.06, while the Nasdaq declined 1.13% and ended at 22,627.27. The S&P shed 1.04% and closed at 6,837.75, putting it into the red once again for 2026.  The 30-stock Dow was dragged down by IBM shares, which declined 13% on the heels of Anthropic outlining new programming capabilities for its Claude Code product.

Asian equities broadly advanced as China reopened from the Lunar New Year holiday, with the CSI 300 and Shanghai Composite both gaining more than 1%. Export-oriented sectors in Japan and South Korea led gains, while semiconductor stocks extended strength as investors rotated toward AI supply-chain beneficiaries.  Hong Kong lagged sharply, falling nearly 2% amid renewed pressure on large technology names linked to AI disruption concerns. The so-called AI “scare trade” showed signs of easing overall, helping S&P 500 futures edge higher into the European session.
