Markets Overview:


The UK 100 is called to open -11 points at at 10,705.  
London stocks are expected to open slightly lower on Thursday as investors look ahead to the European Central Bank’s latest interest rate decision.

UK 100 futures point to a fall of around 11 points, after the index closed up 131 points at just under 10,717 on Wednesday.

The ECB is expected to leave interest rates unchanged, with policymakers balancing easing inflation against renewed energy price pressures linked to the collapse of the US-Iran ceasefire.

The S&P ended Wednesday slightly below the flatline, pressured by a rise in oil prices, as investors looked ahead to another busy day of corporate earnings.  The broad market index dropped 0.14% to end at 7,498.96, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.57% to 25,690.90. The Dow Jones lost 6.06 points, or 0.01%, and closed at 52,218.58.

Asian markets were higher, with Japan’s Nikkei up 1.0%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rising 1.3% and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gaining 0.5%.

Brent crude futures rose about 3.4% to settle at $94.07 per barrel, hitting their highest levels in over a month and briefly topping $95. West Texas Intermediate futures climbed about 3% to close at $86.83.

AJ Bell reported record quarterly inflows as assets under administration passed £120 billion for the first time.

 

Anglo ⁠American reported broadly flat first-half copper production on Thursday and lowered its 2026 copper cost guidance, ‌but said its diamonds and steelmaking coal businesses are expected ⁠to post negative underlying earnings in ⁠the first half.

 

BT, Britain’s biggest telecoms group, said it would meet its target of reaching 25 million British homes with its full fibre network by the end of December, as it reported flat quarterly revenue and reiterated its annual guidance.
