Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +20 at 10,576.
The UK 100 looks set to open higher again this morning, extending gains from yesterday which saw the UK’s blue-chip index set a fresh record closing high.

Stateside yesterday saw the S&P inch higher, but declines in software stocks kept the index’s gains in check.  The broad market benchmark advanced 0.1% and closed at 6,843.22, while the Nasdaq ticked up 0.14% to close at 22,578.38. The Dow climbed 32.26 points, or 0.07%, and settled at 49,533.19.  Investors rotated out of beaten-down software names, which added to the losses they’ve seen this year, and into financial stocks such as Citigroup and JPMorgan.  Shares of Citi jumped 2.6%, while shares of JPMorgan were up more than 1%.

Asian stocks rose overnight with tech stabilising; several markets remained closed for Lunar New Year. Japan outperformed with Nikkei +1.1% and TOPIX +1.4% as tech recouped losses; support also came from stronger-than-expected January export growth (though imports fell and the trade balance remained negative). Australia’s ASX 200 rose 0.4%; BHP pulled back (-1.6%) after strong prior-day gains, while CSL edged up on a licensing deal.

Company News:

BAE Systems posted a 10% increase in sales in 2025, on the back of large orders for Eurofighter Typhoon jets, frigates and combat vehicles placed by European governments.  The London-listed aerospace and defence manufacturer said Wednesday that sales reached a record 30.66 billion pounds ($41.60 billion) last year.  Underlying earnings before interest and taxes–the group’s preferred measure of profitability–grew 12% to £3.32 billion in 2025.  Net profit stood at £2.06 billion last year, up from 1.96 billion pounds year-on-year, and slightly below a Visible Alpha consensus estimate of £2.09 billion.  BAE, which makes a range of war equipment and provides cybersecurity services, said its order backlog reached a record £83.6 billion as of the end of December. The company’s order intake was worth £36.8 billion, it added.  For 2026, BAE Systems expects sales to grow between 7% and 9%. Underlying EBIT and underlying earnings per share should both increase between 9% and 11%, it said.  The group raised its dividend by 10% to 36.3p.

Glencore, fresh from a failed takeover approach from bigger rival Rio Tinto (RIO.L), opens new tab, reported slightly lower earnings on Wednesday, and said it would return $2 billion to shareholders.  Talks to forge a $240 billion global mining giant were called off earlier this month over differences on valuation and ownership.
