The UK 100 is called to open flat at 10,317. The UK 100 looks set to open broadly flat this morning, having gained marginally yesterday, adding 0.08%, as gains in energy companies offset weakness across travel, leisure and mining stocks. Oil majors such as BP and Shell advanced more than 1%, tracking elevated crude prices amid ongoing disruptions to supply routes in the Gulf. In contrast, travel and leisure stocks declined nearly 2% as higher fuel costs weighed on the sector. The UK 250 underperformed, falling 0.6%, with industrials and financials among the main drags.
U.S. equities closed firmly higher, led by technology and AI-related stocks. The S&P 500 rose 1.01% to 6,699.38, the Nasdaq gained 1.22% to 22,374.18, and the Dow Jones added 0.83% to 46,946.41, marking the strongest daily performance in over a month. Technology stocks drove the rally as Nvidia’s developer conference reinforced expectations for continued AI investment. Nvidia gained 1.6%, while Meta rose after reports the company plans to reduce its workforce by more than 20% as it restructures around artificial intelligence.
Asian markets traded mostly higher. South Korea’s KOSPI surged nearly 3%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.5% and the TOPIX gained 1.1%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 1.1%.
Rolls Royce confirmed an order for 40 engines to be used on 20 Airbus freighter aircraft.
