The UK 100 is called to open +21 at 10,494. The UK 100 looks set to open higher this morning, this comes as The UK’s unemployment rate today rose to its highest level in nearly five years at 5.2%. December’s figure compared with City forecasts for an unchanged 5.1%. The rate of average earnings growth including bonuses fell by more than expected to 4.2%, having been 4.6% in the previous three month period.
Asian markets traded mixed in thin conditions with several markets closed for Lunar New Year. Japan’s Nikkei and TOPIX extended losses following weaker-than-expected GDP data, while technology names remained under pressure amid AI-related concerns. Australia’s ASX 200 gained, supported by strong earnings from BHP which lifted the mining sector and broader sentiment.
U.S. equity futures moved lower during Asian hours, with S&P 500 futures down around 0.5% and Nasdaq 100 futures underperforming as AI-driven volatility continued to weigh on risk appetite having been closed yesterday for the Presidents Day holiday.
Antofagasta posted a 52% jump in annual core profit on Tuesday, aided by higher prices for the metal despite a modest production drop. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) for 2025 rose to a record $5.2 billion from $3.43 billion a year earlier, in line with analysts’ expectations. The copper miner’s proposed final dividend for 2025 was 48 cents a share, meaning full-year distributions work out at a 50% payout of underlying earnings per share. Antofagasta made a record shareholder payout of 142.5 cents a share in 2021, for a total $1.4 billion. Its policy is to return at least 35% of net earnings to shareholders.
