Markets Overview:

 

The UK 100 is called to open -37 points this morning at 7381.  The UK 100 looks set to open in the red this morning, following Asian markets lower after sentiment was hit by an 11.1% fall in monthly retail sales (double the figure predicted) and a 2.9% drop in industrial output (against a prediction of a modest gain).  On Friday US markets rose and in turn stopping the S&P from entering a bear market territory, The Dow Jones rose 466.36 points to 32,196.66, or 1.47%. The S&P gained 2.39% to close at 4,023.89 and the Nasdaq jumped 3.82% to 11,805.

Company News:

Greggs records LFL sales growth of 24.7% in the first 19 weeks as they note they’ve opened 49 new shops during this period. They state that trading is in line with their plan and back their FY expectations on solid performance. Their total sales in 19 weeks to May 14th came in at £495m (2021: £378m).

 

 

National Express says all-share offer for Stagecoach made in March is final and won’t be increased.

 

 

Ryanair posted a 355m euro loss for the pandemic-hit 12 months to end-March, but said it was impossible to accurately forecast anything beyond hoping for a return to “reasonable profitability” this year.

 

 

Vodafone: Emirates Telecommunications Group e& has acquired a 9.8% stake in Vodafone for $4.4bn.
