Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +24 points this morning at 8,158. The UK 100 looks set to open higher again this morning, Data out this morning from the ONS shows that UK average weekly wages grew 5.6% year-on-year in the three months to February, lower than the average forecast of 5.7%.  Weekly pay excluding bonuses was up 5.9%, again lower than the 6.0% expected.   Private sector earnings ex-bonuses were up 5.9%.

Asian markets are mixed this morning, with Japan’s and India’s benchmarks up 1% and 2.1%, respectively, but China’s main indices lower.

Stocks rose in a choppy session on Wall Street yesterday, helped by a rally in tech names following a surprise U.S. tariff exemption from President Donald Trump.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 312.08 points, or 0.78%, to close at 40,524.79. The Nasdaq rose 0.64% to end at 16,831.48, while the S&P added 0.79% and settled at 5,405.97. All three indexes at times traded in negative territory during the turbulent session.

B&M European Value Retail S.A. reported a 3.7% increase in group revenues for FY25, reaching £5.6 billion, and expects annual profit above midpoint of forecast range driven by new store performance and positive sales in France, despite a decline in like-for-like sales in the UK and Heron Foods. The company opened 45 new stores in the UK and continues to expand in France and Heron Foods, with a robust pipeline for future openings. The group’s adjusted EBITDA is expected to exceed the midpoint of its guidance range, and the company is progressing with a redomicile process to enhance shareholder returns.
