Markets Overview:

 

The UK 100 is called to open -120 points this morning at 7225.  The UK 100 index’s gains from yesterday are expected to be undone on Thursday as markets continue to reflect worry about inflation, central bank tightening and potential recessions, after the US consumer price index in April remained near its highest level in more than 40 years.  Another Wall Street sell-off took place overnight, following US consumer price inflation fell slightly to 8.3%.  Tech and growth stocks on the Nasdaq led the decline, tumbling another 3.2%, with the S&P 500 falling 1.65% and the Dow Jones dropping 1%.  Asian shares tumbled on Thursday; The Shanghai Composite in China declined 0.46% while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 2.25%.  Japan’s Nikkei 225 was trading 1.80% lower and South Korea’s Kospi slipped 1.65%.

Company News:

BT Group have finalised a deal to combine its sports broadcasting unit with Discovery Inc, as it met expectations with a 2% rise in core earnings for the year to end-March. They also reconfirmed its outlook for the current year.

 

 

Coca-Cola HBC will evaluate all options for its Russian operations and have a smaller presence in the country, focusing on local brands. They reported that organic revenue in Q1 rose 25.9%, excluding Russia and Ukraine.

 

 

Hargreaves Lansdown reports assets under administration of £132.3bn, with client growth of 90,000 year to date and client retention rate of 92.4%.

 

 

Land Securities are to sell 32-50 Strand in London for £195m.

 

 

Rolls-Royce traded in line with expectations for the first four months of the year, helped by a gradual return to flying and increased government investment in defence. They expect underlying revenue growth to be at a low double-digit percentage compound growth rate from 2021 and an operating margin percentage in the high single digits. They expect trading cashflow to comfortably exceed operating profit.

 

 

Vodafone are in talks to merge their UK operations with Three Uk.
