The UK 100 called to open +12 points this morning at 9,141. The UK 100 looks set to build on yesterday’s strong advance when it opens today, this comes after Donald Trump’s decision to pause trade hostilities with Beijing for a further 90 days.
It was a different story across the Atlantic on Monday, we saw stocks fall as traders braced for key U.S. inflation reports due out later in the week and largely ignored the somewhat positive development in the tariff saga. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 200.52 points, or 0.45%, and settled at 43,975.09. The S&P 500 lost 0.25% to close at 6,373.45, and the Nasdaq Composite was off 0.3% and ended at 21,385.40.
Asian stocks mostly gained on Tuesday, with Japan’s Nikkei hitting a fresh all-time record high. The Nikkei jumped as much as 2.8%, or 1,162.86 points, to 42,983.34 in the afternoon before easing back slightly, surpassing its previous record of 42,426.77 set in July last year. Heavyweight shares led the charge — SoftBank Group surged 7.07%, Advantest climbed 7.34%, Toyota gained 3.14%, and Fast Retailing advanced 4.67%. Analysts at IwaiCosmo Securities cited easing tensions over US-China trade talks and speculation over imminent US interest rate cuts as key drivers of the rally. The extension, announced Monday, staves off triple-digit duties on Chinese goods and removes one immediate risk for global markets. Trump signed an executive order delaying the planned tariff hike to allow more time for negotiations, with Beijing issuing a similar statement. Without the extension, tariffs on Chinese imports could have risen from an already steep 30 per cent.
Bellway on Tuesday reported a 14.3% increase in home completions for the full year, as steadying mortgage rates supported consumer demand. The company reported total housing completions of 8,749 homes for the year ended July 31, compared with 7,654 homes in the prior year.
Entain forecast its annual core profit outlook above market expectations on Tuesday, banking on strong performance in its largest market, the UK and Ireland. Entain have also this morning raised its full year guidance.
