The UK 100 is called to open +23 points at at 10,631. London stocks are expected to open modestly higher on Friday as investors await a major batch of UK economic data, while developments in the Strait of Hormuz and elevated oil prices remain firmly in focus.
Futures indicate the UK 100 will open around 17 points, or 0.2%, higher at 10,625.32, after the blue-chip index closed 0.6% lower at 10,608.92 on Thursday.
Wall Street remained under pressure overnight, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 317 points to 52,064, while the S&P 500 declined 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.7%.
Hotter-than-expected US producer-price inflation and rising Treasury yields unsettled markets ahead of Friday’s more closely watched US consumer-price inflation report.
Asian markets also traded lower. Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 2.3%, while China’s Shanghai Composite fell 1.1%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.5% and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.9%.
Japanese producer prices fell 0.2% month-on-month in August, reversing an upwardly revised 0.4% increase in July. On an annual basis, producer prices increased 7.6%, slightly below July’s revised 7.7% but ahead of expectations for 7.4%.
Berkeley Group said on Friday that buyer sentiment remained subdued, with some customers likely to defer transactions until after the UK’s October budget. The company said it continues to operate within its four-year £1.4 billion ($1.89 billion) pre-tax profit plan, with profits expected to be slightly weighted towards the first half of the current financial year.
