The UK 100 is called to open +30 points this morning at 9,255. The UK 100 index gave back early gains yesterday to close 17.14 points lower at 9225.39 as weak retailers and increased geopolitical concerns impacted the performance. London’s top flight is forecast to open about 0.2% higher this morning, reflecting a largely positive session for Asia markets.
Asian markets saw notable gains on Thursday, breaking records largely due to a rally in technology stocks. Investor sentiment was bolstered by the expectation that benign U.S. inflation figures would allow for a Federal Reserve rate cut in the coming week, with further cuts anticipated by year-end.
Stateside, we saw the S&P reach fresh highs on Wednesday after a reading on wholesale prices unexpectedly declined, a welcome development for investors clamouring for a Federal Reserve rate cut next week to boost the economy. The broad market index finished up 0.3% at 6,532.04, a record close for the index. It had risen about 0.7% at its peak to 6,555.97, scoring a new all-time intraday high as well. The Nasdaq edged up 0.03% to end at 21,886.06, likewise notching a closing high after hitting an all-time intraday high prior to its afternoon pullback. The Dow Jones lost 220.42 points, or 0.48%, to finish at 45,490.92, bogged down by a decline in Apple shares as the latest iPhone announcement failed to impress investors.
Trainline today bolstered annual profit guidance after reporting that net ticket sales rose 8% to £3.2 billion in the six months to the end of August. The sales growth, which compares with the company’s full-year target range of 6-9%, helped lift group revenues by 2% to £235 million. The FTSE UK listed online ticketing platform now expects adjusted earnings growth at the top end of its previous guidance range of between 6% and 9%. UK consumer net ticket sales were 8% higher at £2.1 billion, while the international business grew 2% to £594 million as Trainline focused investment on European high-speed routes with emerging carrier competition.
