The UK 100 is called to open +103 points at 9890. The UK 100 index is seen building on last night’s record close as global markets benefit from the prospect of an end to the US government shutdown. The pound today stood 0.3% lower at $1.312 after unemployment figures boosted the chances of a December interest rate cut. Bank of England policymakers last week voted 5-4 to keep the base rate at 4%. Their next meeting concludes on 18 December. Today’s figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that wage growth pressures, albeit still relatively high, are slowly easing. Estimates for payrolled employees dropped by 117,000 between September 2024 and September 2025 and decreased by 32,000 on a monthly basis.
Stocks Stateside closed higher on Monday after Senate lawmakers took a critical step towards a potential deal to end the historic U.S. government shutdown. The Dow Jones climbed 381.53 points, or 0.81%, to end at 47,368.63. The S&P gained 1.54% to settle at 6,832.43, while the Nasdaq advanced 2.27% to finish at 23,527.17. Nvidia, Broadcom and other artificial intelligence bull market leaders led the gains as a possible end to the shutdown put investors in a risk-taking mood again. Microsoft shares also rose 1.9%, snapping an eight-day losing streak — its longest daily slide since 2011.
Asia markets are slightly lower after yesterday’s strong performance, while the price of gold has continued its upward run with a rise of 0.4% to $4131 an ounce.
Vodafone today upgraded its full-year outlook for both earnings and cash flow after it returned to top-line growth in Germany in the second quarter. Chief executive Margherita Della Valle said as well as an improved performance in Germany, Vodafone had made a fast start in bringing together the Vodafone and Three networks in Britain after completing its merger in May.
