Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +12 points at 8,612.  The UK 100 looks set to open higher this morning, recovering some losses from Monday and shaking off a sell-off in New York.

Asian stocks fell sharply on Tuesday as a market selloff extended on mounting worries that a wide-ranging trade war could dent U.S. economic growth and lead to a recession, sending skittish investors to the safe-haven Japanese yen.  Investor concerns about the potential economic slowdown were exacerbated after President Donald Trump in a Fox News interview talked about a “period of transition” while declining to predict whether his tariffs would result in a U.S. recession.

On Wall Street yesterday the S&P shed 2.7%, touching its lowest level since September at one point and closing at 5,614.56. The tech-heavy Nasdaq saw the sharpest decline of the major averages, falling 4% for its worst session since September 2022 and closing at 17,468.32. The Dow Jones dropped 890.01 points, or 2.08%, ending at 41,911.71.  The S&P is off 8.7% from its all-time high reached Feb. 19, and the Nasdaq is off nearly 14% from its recent high. A 10% decline is considered a correction on Wall Street.

Company News:

Costain Group reported a robust financial performance for the year ended December 2024, with a record increase in its forward work position to £5.4 billion. Despite a slight decline in revenue to £1,251 million, the company achieved significant growth in adjusted operating profit, operating margins, and earnings per share. The company’s strategic focus on high-quality contracts and investment in chosen markets has resulted in improved financial metrics and increased confidence in future growth prospects. The company has also doubled its full-year dividend.

Domino’s Pizza Group reported an about 4% rise in underlying core profit on Tuesday, on increasing orders boosted by discount offerings.

Kier Group reported significant operational and financial progress for the six months ending December 31, 2024, with a 5% increase in revenue and a 3% rise in adjusted operating profit. The company achieved a strong net cash position, reducing average month-end net debt by £99 million, and announced a 20% increase in the interim dividend. Kier’s record order book of £11 billion provides substantial visibility, with 98% of expected FY25 revenue secured.  They have also initiated a £20 million share buyback programme.

Persimmon today said underlying market fundamentals remain strong after its annual results showed an improved order book at the start of 2025.  The housebuilder’s net private sales rate per outlet per week improved to 0.67 in the first nine weeks of this year, up 14% on a year earlier.  Combined with a 3% increase in the private average selling price to £288,542, the current private forward order book of £1.15 billion is 27% higher year on year.  The figure for 2024 came in at 10,664, an increase of 7% on the year before as underlying pre-tax profits rose 10% to £395.1 million.  They said they were targeting 11,000-11,500 completions in 2025.
