The UK 100 called to open flat this morning at 8,975. The UK 100 looks set to open broadly flat this morning having closed at fresh record highs on Thursday. Data out this morning from the office of national statistics showed that the UK economy had shrunk for a 2nd consecutive month, interacting 0.1% in May.
The S&P and Nasdaq reached new milestones on Thursday as investors continued to shrug off tariff worries. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed at all-time highs, with the broad index gaining 0.27% to end the day at 6,280.46. The tech-heavy Nasdaq closed up 0.09% to 20,630.67. The Dow Jones added 192 points, or 0.43%, to finish at 44,650.64.
Stock futures however, fell after Trump unveils 35% tariffs on Canada starting August 1st.
Asian shares were mixed in cautious trading Friday after Wall Street closed at an all-time high with Delta Air Lines kicking off earnings season with a solid outlook for the rest of 2025, spurring an airline stock rally. Chinese markets were sharply higher. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong added 1.6 % to 24,402.41, while the Shanghai Composite index climbed 1.1% to 3,546.50. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 edged down 0.1% to 39,662.19, while South Korea’s Kospi was up 0.1% to 3,185.15.
BP‘s second-quarter results will be hit by lower prices it received for its gas and oil, it said in a quarterly trading update on Friday, ahead of full results due August 5. “In the gas & low carbon energy segment, realizations, compared to the prior quarter, are expected to have an impact in the range of $(0.1) to (0.3) billion,” BP said. “In the oil production & operations segment, realizations, compared to the prior quarter, are expected to have an impact in the range of $(0.6) to (0.8) billion.”
