Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +30 at 10,383.
The UK 100 is seen opening higher this morning, regaining the bulk of yesterday’s fall.

The S&P rose on Monday, boosted by technology stocks, while the Dow Jones reached new heights as investors awaited critical economic data and another batch of earnings reports following a volatile week that ended with the 30-stock index reaching a key milestone.  The broad-based index advanced for a second straight day, rising 0.47% and ending at 6,964.82. The blue-chip Dow eked out a 20.20-point gain, or 0.04%, and settled at 50,135.87. The Dow Industrials scored a fresh all-time intraday high and closing record. The Nasdaq jumped 0.9%, closing at 23,238.67.  Nvidia and Broadcom were standouts yet again Monday, extending their gains from the previous session with an advance of 2.5% and 3.3%, respectively. Shares of fellow artificial intelligence player Oracle were up 9.6% after receiving an upgrade to buy from neutral at D.A. Davidson due to optimism around OpenAI and its beneficiaries.

Asian equities extended their rally, pushing regional benchmarks to fresh record highs as optimism around Japan’s political outlook and global tech sentiment carried into a new session.  Japan once again led the region. The Nikkei surged above 57,600, marking another all-time high, while the TOPIX also hit record levels. The rally is being driven by the so-called “Takaichi trade”, with markets welcoming decisive political leadership and expectations of pro-growth fiscal policy, tax incentives and increased domestic investment.  Elsewhere, Hong Kong and South Korea posted further gains, supported by technology stocks as concerns around AI disruption continued to ease. Mainland Chinese markets were steadier, while broader Asian indices touched record territory.  The yen strengthened for a second day following verbal jawboning from Japanese officials and a reduction in political uncertainty. Meanwhile, the yuan rose to its strongest level since May 2023 amid reports that China is encouraging banks to limit exposure to US Treasuries.

Company News:

Barratt Redrow today reported a “resilient performance in a subdued market” after adjusted profits fell 13.6% to £199.9 million in the six months to 28 December.  The builder delivered 7444 home completions in the period and expects a total of between 17,200 and 17,800 across the year, which is in line with previous guidance.  Chief executive David Thomas said a strong land bank, solid forward sales and synergies following Barratt’s merger with Redrow left the business well placed for medium-term growth.  However, he added: “While progress made on planning reform is encouraging, a stable and supportive demand environment is essential to enable increased delivery at scale across the sector.”
