Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -6 Points this morning at 9,503.  The UK 100 looks set to open lower this morning, this comes after the UK’s blue-chip index gave back some of this weeks gains on Thursday, after a poor session for banks Lloyds and HSBC.

Data out this morning showed retail footfall declined by 1.8% in September compared with a year ago, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said today.  This was more than the 0.4% decline registered in August amid the consumer confidence impact of a potential tax-rising Budget.  Tube strikes in London, heavy rainfall in the first half of September and Storm Amy towards the end of the month exacerbated the decline, the BRC added.

The S&P and Nasdaq pulled back from fresh all-time intraday highs on Thursday, with both indexes taking a breather from their gains in the previous session as the U.S. government shutdown continues on.  The broad market index dropped 0.28% to close at 6,735.11, while the tech-heavy index slid 0.08% to finish at 23,024.63. At their highs of the day, the S&P 500 added 0.2%, and the Nasdaq was up 0.1%. The Dow Jones, meanwhile, declined 243.36 points, or 0.52%, to close at 46,358.42.

Asian markets largely declined on Friday, following a temporary pause in the recent rally of Wall Street. The day also recorded a pullback in gold prices from their record highs after a significant surge in recent weeks. Despite this trend, U.S. futures and oil prices showed increases.  The majority of Asian indexes were in the red, with South Korea’s Kospi being a notable exception, rising 1.3% to 3,596.36 as trading resumed after a holiday. This surge was largely driven by a strong performance from tech stocks, most notably SK Hynix, which saw a rise of nearly 7%. Samsung Electronics also benefited, climbing 5.4% on the back of news that Nvidia-backed Reflection AI had raised $2 billion, propelling its market valuation to $8 billion.  Conversely, Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 1% to 48,087.75, retracting from significant gains the day prior, after data indicated that producer prices had risen more than anticipated in September. The Hong Kong Hang Seng index fell by 0.8% to 26,534.65, while the Shanghai Composite index declined by 0.5% to 3,913.98. In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 edged down 0.1% to 8,959.80, and Taiwan’s stock market remained closed due to a holiday.

Company News:

Ibstock today cut guidance after reporting weaker than expected demand due to heightened economic and political uncertainty.  The third quarter trends in the core markets of its clay and concrete businesses mean second half earnings are likely to be similar to the first half.  Ibstock said customers became more cautious as the quarter progressed, with these conditions now assumed to continue through the remainder of the year.
