Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +19 at 10,405.
The UK 100 looks set to open higher today, this comes after an up and down session to kick of the week for the UK’s blue-chip index.

Stateside yesterday saw the S&P rise, boosted by technology stocks, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached new heights as investors awaited critical economic data and another batch of earnings reports following a volatile week that ended with the 30-stock index reaching a key milestone.  The broad-based index advanced for a second straight day, rising 0.47% and ending at 6,964.82. The blue-chip Dow eked out a 20.20-point gain, or 0.04%, and settled at 50,135.87. The Dow Industrials scored a fresh all-time intraday high and closing record. The Nasdaq Composite jumped 0.9%, closing at 23,238.67.  Nvidia and Broadcom were standouts yet again Monday, extending their gains from the previous session with an advance of 2.5% and 3.3%, respectively. Shares of fellow artificial intelligence player Oracle were up 9.6% after receiving an upgrade to buy from neutral at D.A. Davidson due to optimism around OpenAI and its beneficiaries.

Asian equities extended their rally, pushing regional benchmarks to fresh record highs as optimism around Japan’s political outlook and global tech sentiment carried into a new session.  Japan once again led the region. The Nikkei surged above 57,600, marking another all-time high, while the TOPIX also hit record levels. The rally is being driven by the so-called “Takaichi trade”, with markets welcoming decisive political leadership and expectations of pro-growth fiscal policy, tax incentives and increased domestic investment.  Elsewhere, Hong Kong and South Korea posted further gains, supported by technology stocks as concerns around AI disruption continued to ease. Mainland Chinese markets were steadier, while broader Asian indices touched record territory.  The yen strengthened for a second day following verbal jawboning from Japanese officials and a reduction in political uncertainty. Meanwhile, the yuan rose to its strongest level since May 2023 amid reports that China is encouraging banks to limit exposure to US Treasuries.

BP has halted its share buyback programme after reporting fourth quarter profits in line with expectations, as crude prices slipped below $60 a barrel for the first time in almost five years.  The London-listed oil major posted underlying replacement cost profit of $1.54bn for the final three months of 2025, matching the $1.54bn forecast by analysts, according to an LSEG compiled consensus.  Full-year net profit for 2025 came in at $7.49bn, slightly below analysts’ expectations of $7.58bn and down from almost $9bn in 2024.  The last time the oil major did not launch a quarterly buyback was in 2020, during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, when oil prices slumped and energy companies moved to protect their balance sheets.  BP’s previous buyback was $750m, announced in November alongside its third quarter results.
