Index Focus – 16 Feb - 16 February 2015

Equity markets have remained steady this morning amid hopes of continuing bailout negotiations between Greece and her creditors bearing fruit as time ticks away. A real ceasefire in Ukraine is proving elusive and adding to already pronounced geopolitical worries that are dominating a quiet macro calendar today. Gold continues to bounce supported by the aforementioned acting in cahoots with a weaker USD, although the safe haven metal remains in the lower half of a falling channel from 22-Jan.

Where next?
  1. Will the index rise towards highs of 6950? or;
  2. Will the index fall towards lows of 6060?

The UK Index  has taken a breather following strong gains last Friday after its breakout above the 4-day resistance level 6850. A break above 6905 on the shoulders of rising lows from 15-Dec is possible but a significant test remains to be seen.

Germany’s DAX has fallen back slightly after hitting fresh all-time highs on Friday, while the uptrend from mid-October continues to hold. Will some good news from Brussels this week put the index back on its Northwards course?

The US Dow Jones has levelled off on Monday having failed to test all time highs around 18100 over the weekend. A rally from early Feb continues nonetheless, with the index topping 18000 for the first time this year on Friday.

Gold continues its bounce from 3-month rising support around $1220, although remains within a falling channel from Jan highs $1307. Will the metal polish up its act this week?
