Index Focus - 22 September 2017

European equity traders look like they want to end the week positively, but not quite shrugging off the latest in the war of words between North Korea and Trump. Europe outperforms the US thanks to demand for heavyweight defensives (tobacco, healthcare) compensating weakness among riskier assets (Banks & Miners). All eyes on UK PM this afternoon in Florence for a highly anticipated Brexit speech, expected to get negotiations back on track by conceding more on citizens’ rights and offering payments during a hoped for 2yr transition period.

The UK  UK 100 is higher thanks to BATS & IMB (appetite for defensives), AZN (broker upgrade) and rebounds for CPG , WPP & ULVR overcome weakness for Miners (China downgrade, metals down), Banks (reduced risk appetite) and SMIN (results). The German DAX is seeing gains for Infineon Tech & SAP, Deutsche Post, Continental and Commerzbank, offsetting losses for Deutsche Boerse (executive pay cap).

The UK Index 100  has broken above 7270 falling highs, but again found resistance at 7290. The DAX 30 remains in its narrow 12550-12650 rising channel. Dow Jones Futures have bounced from 22300 overnight lows. Gold‘s bounce has lost its momentum at $1295.
