Index Focus - 16 March 2018

Global equities are mixed, with the UK Index , DAX and CAC all positive but Wall St futures suggesting an extension of yesterday’s weakness. European financials outperform thanks to M&A (NEX approach by CME) and hopes of a Fed rate hike next week. US sentiment suffering from talk of yet another White House departure (Nat Sec Advisor McMaster?) to keep the revolving door spinning, and the Trump organisation being subpoenaed by Spec. Counsel Mueller about Russia, which remains in headlines for multiple reasons including a likely Putin re-election this weekend.

The UK 100  is higher thanks to HSBC (extending bounce, Asia optimism), Miners (Copper off lows), BP/RDSb (oil trying to push higher) and GSK (small gains for the heavyweight). Holding it back are PRU (profit taking after Weds’ de-merger-inspired jump) and TSCO (profit-taking after yesterday’s JPMorgan upgrade; talk of Citi being big seller).

The UK Index 100 is holding a bullish breakout at 7155. The DAX 30 is nearing a test of falling highs resistance at 12450. Dow Jones Futures are holding their bounce off 24700 rising support. Gold has found resistance at Wednesday’s $1321 lows.
