Miners to Keep Dropping — Market Talk

Dow Jones – 15 Jan

As another difficult week comes to a close, miners hurtle downwards. Accendo analyst Mike van Dulken says Thursday’s panic buys have turned into panic sells – five of the six biggest fallers are mining companies, with Anglo American erasing this week’s gains, dropping 10.4%. Mr. van Dulken adds that mining investors’ neuroses are unlikely to end any time soon, with 2016 increasingly looking to be a volatile year. BHP’s write-down of $7.2 billion shale assets earlier in the day merely add insult to injury, the analyst says. BHP falls 6.2%. Gold meanwhile, benefits from safe-haven seeking, up 1.7% and bringing with it Randgold, which is now up 3.4%.

U.K. Tightening Not On The Cards — Market Talk

Dow Jones – 14 Jan

The Bank of England is unlikely to change course when it issues its interest rate statement later Thursday, Accendo analyst Augustin Eden says. However, while ECB chairman Mario Draghi disappointed European markets in the autumn, Eden says that he may be more generous this time around although he’s unlikely to tighten European rates. A raise from the Bank of England, the analyst adds, would be a surprise and a mistake, given the U.K. economy’s lack of preparedness for such a move. While the Federal Reserve had been expected to tighten throughout 2016, Mr. Eden now says that the volatility of emerging markets has lowered the likelihood of a previously expected March hike

European Markets Neutralise Earlier Losses — Market Talk

Dow Jones – 11 Jan
The UK 100 is almost flat, down 0.03% to 5910.0, gaining back its losses from earlier in the day. Miners, which had been down, rise – with Anglo American up 2.0% and Glencore up 1.0%. The rest of the European equities indexes – with the exception of oil-producer Norway down 1.5% – are largely flat. The STOXX Europe 600 is up 0.16% and the German DAX gains 0.53%. Given last week’s abysmal performance after Chinese circuit breakers were triggered twice, Accendo Markets research head, Mike van Dulken asks whether this bounce is a relief rally or just another tease. Mr van Dulken notes that Chinese inflation figures may have soothed fears over the weekend in the short-term.
