Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +21 points at at 10,760.
Stocks in London are set to open higher on Tuesday, building on Monday’s solid advance, after US shares were lifted by artificial intelligence buzz overnight.

Wall Street closed sharply higher on Monday as AI-linked and semiconductor names surged on optimism around US–China discussions on AI safety, with the Nasdaq Composite jumping 2.26% to a record 27,122. The S&P 500 added 1.49% to 7,765 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.71% to 52,049. Falling oil prices and an easing in Treasury yields — the 10-year eased to around 4.95% from 5.01% — supported risk appetite, while Bitcoin traded above $87,000 for the first time since January, lifting crypto-linked stocks. Analysts flagged that yields remain elevated near 5% and that a renewed rise in energy prices could unsettle the rally.

Brent crude fell sharply during Monday’s session (down roughly 2% amid easing Middle East supply concerns) before ticking back up to $101.66/bbl (+1.32%) in early Tuesday dealings. Asian markets were mostly firmer overnight tracking Wall Street’s rally: the ASX 200 added 0.2% to 8,748, the Kospi jumped 1.6% to 7,120, the Hang Seng gained 0.6% to 25,185 and the Shanghai Composite rose 0.4% to 3,964; Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 remained shut for a public holiday (last close Friday at 65,018.95), reopening Thursday. On the UK/European calendar, both the Federal Reserve (16 September, rates lifted 25bp to a 3.75–4.00% target range) and the Bank of England (17 September, Bank Rate held at 3.75%) have already met this month, so no central bank decisions are due this week — the ECB’s next meeting is not until 28–29 October. Attention instead turns to Wednesday’s flash September PMIs for the UK, eurozone and US, with several Fed speakers — Williams, Jefferson and Barkin — on the wires today.

Company News:

Kingfisher has upgraded its full-year profit guidance after delivering solid earnings growth for the first half of fiscal 2026/27. Driven by gross margin expansion, robust digital momentum, and strong market share gains in the UK, Poland, and Spain, the home improvement giant reported higher profits alongside disciplined cost management.

Rentokil Initial has agreed to sell its US lake and pond management business, SOLitude Lake Management, to Bain Capital for $230 million (£172.5 million). While the company did not publish standard quarterly financial results today, this major divestment is part of Chief Executive Mike Duffy’s aggressive strategic drive to simplify the group’s corporate footprint.
