Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +34 points at at 10,784.
Stocks in London are set to open higher on Monday, eating into some of last week’s decline, while Asian stocks were largely higher.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was 0.4% higher.   According to first preliminary estimates from the Cabinet Office, Japan’s gross domestic product grew 0.3% quarter-on-quarter in the three months to June, missing the 0.5% FXStreet-cited consensus forecast and coming in below the first quarter’s 0.5% rise.  The Shanghai Composite was up 1.0%. The Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong shot up 1.8%. In Sydney, however, the S&P/ASX 200 was down 0.5%.

In the US on Friday, Wall Street ended lower, with the Dow Jones down 0.2%, the S&P down 0.2% and the Nasdaq down 0.3%.

Iran on Saturday fired back at US President Donald Trump’s claim that he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz part of US territory, saying the crucial energy waterway it has blockaded “will remain Iranian”.  Trump has repeatedly said the strait, which Tehran effectively closed at the start of the Middle East war in late February, is under US control – an assertion the Islamic republic denies.  “The Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on X.  “This strait will only be closed and opened under Iran’s command.”  Trump told a political rally in New York state on Friday that after the US defeats Iran, “pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the US”.
