The UK 100 is called to open +18 points at at 10,790. Stocks in London are set to open higher on Friday, after stocks in New York climbed overnight following cooler inflation readings this week.
In the US on Thursday, Wall Street ended higher, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.1%, the S&P 500 up 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite up 0.8%. The S&P 500 hit a record level of 7,816.70 points, also setting a new closing high of 7,798.99 points.
US consumer price inflation data for July was in line with expectations, numbers on Wednesday showed, strengthening the case for a rate hold next month, though numbers for August could swing the pendulum back in favour of a hike.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was up 0.4%. In China, the Shanghai Composite was down 0.3%, while the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong was 0.8% lower. In Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 was 0.9% lower.
Aviva posted a 24% rise in first-half operating profit on Friday, beating expectations, as its combination with Direct Line and growth in general insurance drove earnings higher. CEO Amanda Blanc’s £3.7 billion ($4.99 billion) takeover of motor insurer Direct Line, has also proved to be a strong bet for the company, which has seen its sales through price comparison sites surge significantly. Operating profit rose to £1.33 billion for the six months to June 30 from £1.07 billion a year earlier, ahead of the £1.26 billion average forecast in a company-compiled consensus.
