The UK 100 is called to open +43 points at at 10,922. Stocks in London are set to open higher on Wednesday as optimism over a potential US-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz lifted sentiment and pushed oil prices lower.
US President Donald Trump warned Iran it would be “hit very hard” unless the strategic Strait of Hormuz is reopened “very soon”, while insisting negotiations to end months of conflict were progressing.
“We’re having very good discussions,” Trump told Fox News during a visit to California. “The only thing that matters is action. And they want to make a deal. We’ll see what happens.”
In the US on Tuesday, Wall Street ended higher, with the Dow Jones up 1.7%, the S&P up 1.8% and the Nasdaq up 2.6%.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration met with technology executives to finalise a security review process for advanced artificial intelligence models before they are released, although US media reported the framework would apply only to “closed” AI models.
In Asia on Wednesday, the Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo surged 3.5%. In China, the Shanghai Composite rose 1.5%, while the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong gained 0.2%. The S&P/ASX 200 in Sydney added 0.9%.
Glencore reported an 86% increase in first-half earnings, boosted by strong profits from its commodity trading business as the Middle East conflict fuelled market volatility, and said it aims to secure a secondary listing in Australia in October.
Ibstock has fallen to a first-half loss as subdued housebuilding activity and weak repair and maintenance demand continued to weigh on trading. The company reported a statutory pre-tax loss of £27m for the six months to 30 June, compared with a profit of £8m a year earlier, after taking a £25m non-cash impairment charge against its soft mud brick facilities. Revenue fell 15.1% to £164m, while adjusted EBITDA dropped 27.6% to £26m.
Legal & General reported a forecast-topping 7% increase in core operating profit to £918 million ($1.24 billion) for the first half of 2026 on Wednesday, as well as an improved interim dividend of 6.24 pence per share.
