The UK 100 is called to open -19 points at at 10,459. Stocks in London are set to open lower on Thursday, as oil fell after reports of “positive progress” during indirect talks between US and Iranian negotiators.
Futures indicate the UK 100 looks set to open down 19 points, 0.19%, at 10,459 on Thursday. The index of London large-caps closed down 18.78 points, 0.2%, at 10,478.34 on Wednesday. It has been reported that US and Iran negotiators made “positive progress” during indirect talks in Doha, with the next round expected after the late Iranian supreme leader’s funeral. “Qatar & Pakistan mediators concluded separate meetings with the US & Iranian negotiators in Doha today, with positive progress made on issues related to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, building on the outcomes of the Lake Lucerne Summit,” foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said on X. This echoes US President Donald Trump’s prior statement that the indirect talks were making progress, offering a tentative sign that diplomacy was holding after recent exchanges of fire threatened efforts to end the Middle East war. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi also said the discussions covered frozen Iranian assets, whose release Tehran has demanded as part of any settlement.
The Dow Jones scaled to a record high before cooling on Wednesday, while the Nasdaq struggled amid declines in chipmakers. The 30-stock average lost 13.96 points, or 0.03%, to close at 52,305.24. Earlier in the session, the Dow surged to a new intraday high of 52,742.66 before retreating as artificial intelligence beneficiary Caterpillar pulled back almost 7%. The S&P dropped 0.22%, ending at 7,483.23. The Nasdaq declined 0.66% to 26,040.03. The tech-heavy index fell as investors dumped semiconductor names, taking profit after the swath of stocks surged more than 80% in the first half of 2026. Micron tumbled more than 10%, although it’s still up more than 260% in the year to date. Sandisk also shed over 10%, but the stock is still toting an advance of more than 750% in 2026. Nvidia and Broadcom also fell roughly 1% and 2%, respectively, in the session.
In Asia on Thursday, the Nikkei 225 in Tokyo was down 1.6%. In China, the Shanghai Composite was 1.5% lower, while the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong gained 0.7% as it reopened after Wednesday’s closure. The S&P/ASX 200 in Sydney fell 0.1%.
Currys reported an 18% rise in adjusted profit before tax to approximately £191 million for the year ended May 2, 2026, citing ‘very solid’ early trading, with growth in both the UK & Ireland and the Nordics supported by hedged energy costs and resilience against global uncertainties.
