Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -2 points at at 10,492.
The UK 100 looks set to open modestly lower on Wednesday, this comes despite data out this morning showed Inflation was unchanged last month despite the Iran war pushing up the cost of fuel and energy.

The consumer prices index (CPI) remained at 2.8% in May, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).  This was despite motor fuel prices surging by 24.6% during the month, which was the steepest jump since September 2022.  Analysts had expected inflation to rise to 3% in May as drivers face soaring fuel costs.

Wall Street delivered a mixed performance on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.6%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite declined 1.2% as investors took profits in some technology stocks following recent strong gains.

Asian markets were generally positive overnight. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.7% after stronger-than-expected trade data showed exports increasing 17% year-on-year, while Australia’s ASX 200 gained 0.6% following evidence of a recovery in household spending.

Later today, attention will shift to the United States where investors will receive retail sales figures, crude oil inventory data and the Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate announcement.
