The UK 100 is called to open +37 points at at 10,100. The UK 100 looks set to open higher today having fallen 2.4% yesterday to a two-month low, while the UK 250 also declined 2.4% to its lowest level since November. Energy was the only sector higher (+1.6%), supported by rising oil prices, with BP up 4.9%. The Bank of England held rates unanimously and warned of inflation risks from the Middle East conflict, stating it is “ready to act”. Markets are now pricing two 25bps hikes by year-end.
US equities closed lower, with the S&P 500 -0.27%, Nasdaq -0.28% and Dow -0.44% declining amid inflation concerns linked to elevated oil prices. The S&P 500 fell below its 200-day moving average, while the Russell 2000 briefly dropped more than 10% from its January peak. Market breadth weakened, with declining stocks outnumbering advancers. Sector weakness was led by materials (-1.55%) and consumer discretionary (-0.87%), with notable declines in Micron (-3.8%), Tesla (-3.2%) and Nvidia (-1%).
Asian markets were mixed. The KOSPI rose 0.5%, while Hang Seng fell 0.7% and Shanghai declined 0.3%, with Alibaba down 5% following earnings.
