Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -55 points at 10,180.
The UK market is set to open lower today, with futures indicating around a 0.3–0.4% decline, mirroring broader European weakness.

US markets are closed today for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, so price action is being driven entirely by futures and by developments across Europe and Asia.

Markets started the week on a cautious footing after President Trump reignited global trade tensions over the weekend. The White House threatened additional tariffs on eight European nations – Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the UK – unless the US is allowed to acquire Greenland.  The proposal includes a 10% tariff from February 1, rising to 25% from June 1 if no agreement is reached. European leaders reacted angrily, calling the threat “blackmail,” with France urging the EU to activate its anti-coercion trade measures.  This escalation has revived memories of last year’s tariff volatility and pushed investors back toward safe havens. US index futures traded lower in thin holiday conditions, while European equity futures point to a weak open.

Asian equities opened under pressure but clawed back some losses as the day progressed.  In Japan, the Nikkei was down around 0.7–0.8%, Topix roughly flat. Domestic politics remain a factor ahead of an expected snap election announcement from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and this week’s Bank of Japan meeting.  Hong Kong’ Hang Seng is down around 1%. In  China indices were largely flat despite mixed economic data.
